Social Studies at the Maternity and Newborn Unit

As part of the subject lessons on "My body, my health", the children in Year 4 learned many new things about the physical development of boys and girls, puberty and also about pregnancy and birth.

The students were able to visit the DRK hospital in Rabenstein and spend a morning in the maternity and neonatal ward together with midwives. Excited and a little nervous about what the children could expect, we took the bus and train from Stollberg to Chemnitz, where we were immediately given a warm welcome. After a brief explanation, the class was divided into two groups. While a midwife gave some of the group theoretical information about 40 weeks of pregnancy and birth, the others were allowed to watch while a pregnant woman underwent an abdominal ultrasound. It was so fascinating and exciting. Then we went one floor up to the neonatal ward. A baby that was just 24 hours old was waiting for us there. The parents allowed us to be present while they changed, weighed and took the baby's temperature. After many wonderful and special impressions, we returned to school in the early afternoon. It was a wonderful day for everyone and one that will live long in the memory.
