We traveled there and back by bus and train. Once we arrived in the historic schoolroom, we were allowed to sit on the old school desks and learned many interesting things about school days 100 years ago. For example, as money was usually tight in the post-war period, a lot of money had to be saved on school supplies. There were special pencil holders for the leftover pencils, which were often sharpened to the last centimeter. A "no name box" for nameless pencils left behind in class would have been unimaginable back then. Great importance was also attached to the care of school satchels, as they were passed on to siblings or even had to survive generations. They were therefore regularly rubbed with leather grease. If there wasn't enough money for this, a rind of bacon was sometimes used for leather care. But be careful! The smell of grease attracted dogs, cats and even wasps, which would often chase you on your way to school. We also learned a lot of interesting facts about the writing used at the time and were allowed to practise writing in Sütterlin script ourselves with the help of a stylus and slate. Afterwards, there were plenty of old teaching aids to marvel at.
